Candle Questions

Find answers to the most common candle related questions!
  • What kind of wick do you use in your candles?

Here at East Coast Candles, we use only the best quality materials in our Candles. The wick in your candle is the most important part. There are many wicks available on the market, and it’s important to have the right wick to match the wax and the size of the vessel, pillar or votive.

When choosing wick for a candle, we always test to ensure we have the right fit and proper burn. We want the flame to be large enough to ensure a large enough pool of wax across the top to eliminate tunneling and get the maximum hot scent throw.

All wick used in our candles is zinc, paper, or cotton cored. Zinc wicks have been tested and have been proven to not be harmful to consumers. We do not use lead core wick.

Be sure to keep your candle wick trimmed to 1/4 of an inch to avoid smoking/soot, maximum scent throw and burn time.

  • What kind of wax do you use for your candles?

A candle is only as good as the wick and wax used to make it. We source our wax from quality producers and test each candle to ensure we get optimum scent throw, fragrance compatibility, and longevity.

We offer a wide selection of candles, and the waxes are different for each type. The two main waxes we use are soy, and paraffin. Soy wax for candles is plant based, and paraffin wax is a bi-product of the petroleum industry. Each candle listing will state which wax(s) is used in the making of your candle.

  • Are your dish candles made of real fruit?

Raspberry Candle Chunks - Quality Premium Fragrance CandlesThis is by far one of the most frequently asked questions! Our dish candles feature chunks of fruit, chocolate, and other shapes. They may look good enough to eat, however all the chunks in our candles are made of wax. Each chunk is made from a mold using paraffin wax, colour and premium fragrance oil so your candle smells great from top to bottom!

They look and smell good enough to eat, but please don’t!

  • Do you use smokeless wicks?

If your candle wick is smoking, it’s due to two factors. Both of which you can control.

Your wick needs trimmed – Your wick should always be trimmed to 1/4 of an inch, as your candle burns – you must extinguish it and re-trim. Trimming your jar candles can be difficult, we suggest a wick trimmer.

You have a draft – The shape of the flame controls combustion efficiency. When you have a draft from a window, fan it changes the shape of the flame. Ensure you’re candles are burning in a draft free area.
