As with anything, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do something – it’s no different with candles. Unless you’re a bit of a candle freak (and we hope you are), there is a chance you may have been burning your candles the wrong way. In this post we’ll give you 5 tips to get the most out of your candle. This will include advice on how to enjoy your candles, make the most out of your purchase and keep safe when burning candles in your home. I’ll offer some simple solutions to certain candle related problems to get you back on track. Let’s get started.

In no particular order here are some tried and true signs you’re burning your candle all wrong, and the fix to get the most out of your candle burning experience.

TIP NUMBER 1 – Trim your wick to 1/4 inch, and keep it away from drafts!

PROBLEMS: Black Smoke & Soot.

Uh Oh! Black smoke and soot, that can’t be good for your air quality, right? This is one of the most common no-no’s we see, but it’s also super easy to correct! This phenomenon is the result of an inefficient flame, and it comes down to the shape of the flame. When you light a candle, it starts the cycle of burning the hydro carbons in the wax, heat causes these hydro carbons to rise and burn off. The heat of the flame begins to melt and vaporize more wax, as the hot air moves up it draws in cooler air through the bottom. Here are the two main causes: Your wick is too long, causing a long flame which can’t sustain the cycle and begins to flicker, or there is a draft (open window, ceiling fan, etc). These upset the delicate cycle of efficient burning.

To keep your wick trimmed, we recommend using a wick trimmer. This will help you get the right wick length every time, get down into a deep jar easily, and stop the wick trimmings from falling into your lovely candle.

TIP NUMBER 2 – Burn your candle until the proper wax pool has formed!

PROBLEMS: Tunneling & Poor Scent Throw.

This is a pretty common mistake people make and it mostly affects jar candles and pillars, or those with a larger diameter. When you light a jar candle, let it burn long enough for the melted wax pool to extend the entire diameter of the candle. (Depending on the size of your candle and type of wax, this can take anywhere from 2-5 hours). This will ensure that it solidifies evenly at the same level and doesn’t create a tunnel down the center. Furthermore, the larger the wax pool, the better the scent throw. Some candle manufacturers recommend a minimum burn time, but this will vary depending on the diameter of the candle, type of wax, along with the type and number of wicks. If you have to leave and must extinguish the candle just try to catch up the next time. No biggie!

TIP NUMBER 3 – Give your candle a rest!

PROBLEM: Candle loses it’s scent during a long burn.

If you’re a candle lover, this might be difficult for you to do – but it’s 100% necessary to ensure you get the most out of your candle. Don’t burn your candle all day. If you are a professional candle addict this will be a good habit you’ll hold onto forever. Once you have a proper sized wax pool formed over your candle it’s time to start the count down. I recommend 1-2 hours maximum. Then it’s time to extinguish the candle and let it harden back up. This cooling and heating cycle will help you get the most burn time and preserve the scent throw throughout the entire burn. It will also give your nose a rest. Time to light a candle of a different scent! This will keep the good smells coming and keep you from getting nose blind to your favourite scents.

TIP NUMBER 4 – Consider buying soy candles!

PROBLEM: Candle doesn’t last long.

Candles come in a variety of different waxes. The most common being paraffin, soy wax and beeswax. Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum refinement, soy wax is actually an oil that is turned into a solid through a hydrogenation process, and beeswax is the waxy part of a honeycomb made by honey bees. Why should you consider buying soy wax candles? Well, it’s quite simple. Soy candles burn cleaner, burn up to 30% longer, have a lower melt point which helps them to burn more evenly and give off scent earlier. Also, soy wax can be cleaned up with hot soapy water if need be.

TIP NUMBER 5 – Store your candle properly!

PROBLEM: Faded colours/diminished scent.

Being a candle lover means that you probably have a fairly decent stash of your favourite candles. Depending on how quickly you burn through them, you’ll want to make sure you store them properly. Direct sunlight and heat are the two most damaging elements when storing candles. Always store out of direct sunlight in a cool dry area. Never leave your candles in a hot car…you may come back to find them melted into your seat.

~ BONUS TIP –  Buy quality candles ~

No, it’s not a sales pitch, although we do hope you’ll try out our amazing candles if you haven’t already. There are many retailers both on and offline that sell cheap, poor quality candles. Our customers often tell us stories of candles they’ve picked up at their local box store and have had a problem with. Common issues include: poor hot scent throw, too much scent throw, wicks not centered, improper wick size or wrong number of wicks for the size of the candle. Purchasing a quality candle from a reputable candle maker will give you the best experience and help you get your money’s worth. Here at East Coast Candles, each product line is thoroughly tested prior to production and each candle is handmade to ensure the best quality and price. We value our customers as much as they value our candles, if you have an issue with one of our candles we’ll be sure to correct the problem.

Last, but not least, please follow the warning label on each candle you burn and reach out to us with any questions or concerns.

No need to wait for Valentine’s Day to give your loved one a relaxing, sensual massage! After a hard day at work, who wouldn’t love a massage to unwind and help forget about all the negativity flooding the news? Show your love and appreciation with the positive experience of a pampering massage. East Coast Candles now offers an ALL NATURAL luxurious Massage Candle that will leave muscles relaxed and skin soft & silky.

Not only does a sensual massage bring couples closer together, it also promotes relaxation, relieves stress, helps improve sleep quality, and reduces anxiety. And, these days, too much of our daily activities seem to cause anxiety. We could all use a good massage, couldn’t we?

Massage Candles are a great way to set the mood for an actual massage. They produce ambient lighting while the wax & oil blend begins to melt, releasing the aromatic fragrance of pure essential oils. Once the desired amount of wax & oil has melted, extinguish flame. Allow the wax & oil blend to cool slightly before applying. Test with finger. When the wax & oil blend has reached the desired temperature apply to fingertips and begin massaging onto skin. Improve immune system functions, overall energy flow and sense of well being.

So, parents, after the kids go to bed, get sexy & sensual with a relaxing, and probably much needed, massage for a fraction of the price of going to a massage therapist. Who has time for that anyways?

No kids? Massage any time of the day or night!

East Coast Candles All Natural Massage Candles contain natural beeswax & soy wax, shea butter, sweet almond oil, calendula oil, vitamin E oil and the following pure essential oils: Frankincense, Lavender, Rose Geranium and Tea Tree. This natural wax & oil blend will leave skin soft and silky.

What was once used to bring light inside of a dark home is now part of modern decor. Candles have evolved from a necessity to an accessory. Contemporary candle designs have several themes, colors, and scents to help create a different scene and mood for each room and every surface in your home. Candles are a great way to add beautiful new dimension to your decor when you’re searching for a way to quickly update your home’s style in a budget-friendly manner.

Tablescape

Accessorize your tabletops with candles for a freshly scented pick-me-up! Place candles along the table runner or in an arrangement as a centerpiece. This is an easy way to turn an ordinary table into a luxurious table display.

Lanterns

Lanterns are beautiful on their own, but adding a flickering candle to them creates a beautiful ambience. Lighted lanterns make beautiful decor for patios and decks, fireplaces and mantels, and on tabletops. Even when they’re not lit, a lantern full of candles is another stylish way to enhance your home’s decor.

Mantel

No matter what style of decor you choose to display on your mantel, a few candles help make it even more beautiful. Group votive candles in sets of 3 on either side of the focal piece, or place a large candle arrangement in the middle as the centerpiece.

Fireplace Hearth

Add the scent of gingerbread to your home while the fire burns and as you sip hot chocolate. No intense cookie baking required! Gingerbread candles would be a romantic addition to the hearth. Gingerbread scented wax melts are a great idea, too! If you don’t use your fireplace or if you want to keep it relevant through the warmer months, create a beautiful arrangement of candles within the fireplace. Pro tip: Use pillar candles on candle holders and place some of the pillar candles on the floor of the fireplace to create dimension and variety.

Decorative Fragrance Warmers

Fragrance warmers come in several different shapes and themes. Elegant decorative warmers can serve as permanent decor. Themed warmers, such as a Christmas tree or seasonal fall pumpkin make great holiday decor. Scents like Eggnog and Christmas Pine fill your home to make the seasons even jollier.

Mirrors

Place your votive candles or realistic fruit shaped candles on a mirrored surface on your tables for an added glow as the flame is reflected into your room.

DIY Votive Candle Holder Decor

Enhance your single votive holders by using a glue gun to attach your favorite item, such as a colorful leaf for fall, a heart for valentines day, a seashell for a beach theme, or rhinestones if you love to jewel and bedazzle things! You can even use scraps from different projects to create candle holders, such as old wine bottles.

Vases

Fill a clear, wide vase with pebbles, coffee beans, seashells, sand, or pearls and place a candle in the center. It is that easy to make an original and artistic candle display!

Serve Them On A Tray

Place a single candle on a tray with a book and an ornamental piece of decor, such as a vase with a flower or a star burst for an elegant display on your coffee table or ottoman. If you want to make a bigger impact, place several pillar candles and votive candles of the same color but of differing heights on the tray.

Cake Stands

When you’re not serving cake, use your decorative cake stands to place candles on. Sit a collection of three votive candles together on a cake stand as an accent piece in your kitchen, or place one candle on a cake stand and surround it with garland or seasonal decorative plants to display on your buffet.

Wall Focal Piece

Make candles the main piece of artwork on your walls! In lieu of a gallery wall of photos, use decorative votive candle or tealight holders to make a big impact. Arrange the candle holders in a simple pattern and place a votive candle or tealight in each one. During the day, the pattern will look like artwork. At night, light the candles to bring a new and invigorating element to the candle arrangement!

Teacups

Take your mismatched teacups out of hiding in your cupboard or purchase teacups from your favorite retail or thrift store to use them as candle holders. Place a votive candle  in a teacup alone or surround it with coffee beans or colorful stones. Let the teacup adorn your side tables and dining table place settings for a dainty decorative touch.

Wine Glasses

Arrange a few wine glasses upside down on a mirror or along a table runner. Fill the inside of the wine glass with miniature Christmas tree ornaments, faux flowers, or fall foliage. Place candles on top of the wine glass base for a creative new look.

Candles have the power to change the mood of an entire room. No matter how you choose to incorporate them, their light, scent, and beautiful colours tend to lift moods. Most candles may be small, but the next time you want to update your home decor, candles can make a big impact!

The Combinations Are Endless…

Sure, we have TONS of scents to choose from….but don’t let that stop you from creating your own unique scent combinations! Scented wax melts are a great way to fill a room with wonderful fragrance. And if you’re not a fan of  “the flame”, electric wax melters are an excellent alternative to those that require a tealight to melt the wax cradled above.

If the bowl of your wax warmer is large enough you could use 2 whole melts of different scents. If not, it’s no problem to cut a wax melt in half, or even into quarters for easier melt mixing. Alternatively, scented wax simmering bars are already divided into smaller chunks and are easy to break apart, no chopping required. Also, most East Coast Candles signature Fancy Wax Melts are in a variety of smaller (and adorable) pieces.

Is sweet and spicy your thing? Try mixing Vanilla with Cinnamon! Or how about Cinnamon Buns mixed with Dark Chocolate? Chocolate Drizzled Cinnamon Buns sure sound delicious!

Let’s Go Wax Melt Crazy!!!

Cotton Candy + Dreamsicle + Coconut + Raspberry + Pink Sugar + Pineapple!! Now, there’s no way that doesn’t smell EXACTLY like a unicorn riding a rainbow ferris wheel on a tropical island, probably eating an ice cream. Am I right? I think I’ll try that one out myself.

There really are no “wrong” scent combinations, keeping in mind, however, that some scents are quite potent and might overpower those that are more mild. For example, Cactus & Sea Salt, Fresh Laundry, Country Heather etc…very strong scents. They might not play well with others, especially at a 1:1 ratio. They can be a little bossy. It would be interesting, though, to see who would win the fight if all these guys got thrown together.

Some other combinations that might be fun to try:

Apple Jack + Pecan Pie = Cinnamon Apple Crumble
Coconut + Strawberry Banana = Coconana Berry
Pineapple + Fresh Squeezed Oranges + Honeydew Melon = Sweet Citrus Smoothie
Lilac + Freesia + Citrus Breeze = Floral Breeze
Pomegranate + Pink Sugar = Pink Passion
Patchouli Orange + Sandalwood = Hippy Hippy Shake
Biscotti + Amaretto + Cafe Vienna = Delicious!

I could go on…
And on…

But now it’s your turn to come up with some awesome scented wax melt mixes of your very own! Get crazy and HAVE FUN!

Let me explain how soy wax is made, what the benefits are and what to look for when buying soy candles.

What is soy wax?

You might be surprised to learn that soy wax, isn’t wax at all. It’s actually a form of partially-hydrogenated soy bean oil. Hydrogen is added to the soy bean oil and a chemical reaction takes place to turn it into a solid. Hydrogen is the most common chemical element on earth and is part of H2O (water).

Because soy wax comes from soy bean oil, it’s considered all natural and is biodegradable. Soybeans are grown around the world and are considered a sustainable and renewable resource.

Additives

OK, so soy wax is all natural to start – but there are some common additives. Some of them natural and some of them not. The most common additives in soy wax are dye, fragrance and chemicals to make a better performing wax.

Most commercial dyes are not natural. Although there are some natural dyes most are not being used in candle making. Soaps and natural beauty products are more likely to contain natural dyes.

Fragrance is not natural. Although there are many skin safe fragrance oils on the market, they are made synthetically and absolutely not natural.

All natural additives include botanical oils and essential oils.

Botanical oils are often used instead of chemical additives to make a better quality wax from a visual standpoint. 100% soy wax candles will crack and flake on the tops, this is corrected by adding botanical oils or in some cases manufacturers heat gun the top of each candle after it has been poured and cooled.

Essential oils are added in place of fragrance. These oils come from very leafy plants, trees, grasses and seeds. They are most often blended together and are often diluted with a carrier oil. Most producers will use a natural carrier oil to ensure the products made with their oils are still considered all natural. Some of the most common carrier oils are olive, hemp, and soybean oil. Essential oil candles can be more expensive than fragrance candles due to the high cost of the essential oils.

Other types of waxes

There are many types of waxes used in candle making the most common being paraffin, soy and beeswax.

Beeswax candles are all natural, unless they have been dyed or had scent added. They are most commonly sold as pure beeswax. The color of beeswax varies depending on how much it’s been refined and can range from yellow to white. Some batches may even have a blue color if the wax has come from bees that have fed on a lavender field.

Paraffin is by far the most commonly used wax in candle making, it’s the cheapest and easiest to work with. Paraffin wax is petroleum based and is a byproduct of the petroleum refining process.

It’s important to note that all candle waxes contain hydro-carbons and produce a yellow flame when they burn.

Some facts about soy wax:

  • Derived from the soybean plant, soy wax in its pure form is all natural, sustainable and biodegradable.
  • All natural soy wax candles are cleaner burning than paraffin based candles. Paraffin wax is petroleum based, a byproduct of petroleum refining.
  • Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax which helps to release the scent sooner, burn more evenly across the candle, and isn’t as likely to burn when it comes in contact with your skin.
  • Soy wax can be easily cleaned up with hot water and soap.
  • Soy wax candles burn between 30%-50% longer than paraffin candles.

Candle Safety

No matter the type of candle there are some basic steps to take in order to ensure your safety. Never leave a candle un-attended. Always place the candle on a non-combustible surface, away from curtains, children or animals. Make sure you trim your wick to about a ¼” to ensure the flame isn’t too large. In addition to unnecessary heat an untrimmed wick will smoke. Releasing soot and toxins into the air.

Today’s consumers have access to so much more information and are much more educated on their purchases. However, clever marketing still trumps consumer knowledge in some cases.
