Nowadays, we have to consider our impact on the environment if we want to make sure that we are doing our part to take care of the world for future generations. For this reason, we should find healthier alternatives for both our bodies and the environment, which is where soy wax candles come in.
Soy candles are healthy and natural options that have stronger and more long-lasting scents compared to regular paraffin candles. By supporting local soybean products, you will be helping out the farmers as well. Here’s what you need to know about this alternative candle option:
What is soy wax?
Soy wax looks almost exactly the same as paraffin but is softer due to the hydrogen content in the wax. Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, turning it into triglyceride which is a type of curdled fat. The process of making soy candles starts from harvesting soybeans and cleaning them with running water to get rid of the dirt and grime. Once the beans are thoroughly cleaned, the next thing to do is to crack the beans and de-hull them to get to the pastier meat of the beans. The inside of the beans will then be rolled into flakes and the oil extracted from the flakes with the help of solvent and pressure from a hydraulic compressor. The dried flakes can then be used for cattle feed and the oil will then moved on to become soybean oil and soy candles.
The pure soybean oil will be hydrogenated and heated up to around 200°C to turn the unsaturated fat into saturated fat, causing it to thicken up. After some rigorous and rhythmic stirring, the oil will then be left to cool and harden at room temperature. You can make around 1 kg worth of soybean oil from 6 kg of soybeans. Some companies add paraffin or other wax-like substances to the soy wax to get more than 1 kg worth of soy candles, so you need to look for products that use 100% soybean oil.
Listed below are the top benefits of soy candles:
It’s one hundred percent natural
Soy candles are made entirely from soybean oil, which is why it yields less toxic fumes and doesn’t produce carcinogens and carbon dioxide. This makes it a much more sustainable option overall. What’s more, is that you can mix scented oil with melted oil without having to add any additional chemicals!
It offers a longer lasting burn
Soy candles burn much more slowly than paraffin candles do, making it last longer as well. In fact, soy wax can burn anywhere from 35% to 50% longer than paraffin due to its lower melting point, meaning that a wax candle with half the size of a paraffin candle can burn for just as long. Although soy wax candles may be more expensive than paraffin, when you factor in the burning time, soy candles may actually be more cost-effective than paraffin.
It provides even scent distribution
Although the scent of a soy wax candle may not be as strong due to its cooler burn, the scented smoke is much lighter as well. This allows the scent to be distributed or “thrown” more evenly throughout the room. You can also light a soy candle in an air-conditioned room without any worries.
